Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary texts?

I wanted to maintain the text consistently so it linked between the different magazines and posters of my other piers of team G.O.O.D. The image we used in the poster was powerful and conventional to our genre as it has the bad vs the good guy on two separate posters, which many action movie posters do, when i researched in to real media products. The spark effect on both posters creates that gritty action feel to it and though the background is white the way we used the font on the poster made up for it and the way it was layed out was very smart. The small font with the credits also became generically conventional  as you see it in all the film posters.

With the other Magazines the text was still same, as i said it had to be consistent.
The layout was different and it was a landscape so the image could fit for the shatter effect. The broken glass effect with the pelican hunter text was a smart idea and conventional to other real media products. The main task was to keep all the magazines and the posters in link with each other and i feel G.O.O.D have done so. The Pelican Hunter title was a 3D image and it links with the title in the film trailer at the end.

G.O.O.D also used all conventional motifs when producing and is shown in all all posters. We have looked into film poster and they all have the IMAX and the distributor 'Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros.' credits etc. The distribution is conventional as it is printed in all posters and on our print.

Evaluation: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From this positive feed back i feel our film was presented and represented in the right way. The clear narrative  came across to the audience and i feel the audience understood the concept of our film trailer. The reception theory came across as the audience knew the genre and understood the conventions of film trailer. The main importance that we wanted to get across was to keep the audience hooked on the trailer so they would not get board. G.O.O.D also wanted the audience to have a buzz after seeing the film and that came across through the feedback above.

Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

G.O.O.D first produced a story board so it made it easier to know what we were going to film as all film's in the industry do. Our first draft that consisted of shots from London and Charlie's house, were all the difficult shots we wanted to get out of the way. We wanted feedback, so we showed the small clip to the class and our teachers in order to express their views upon our starting point. The feed back that was recognized most was the opacity of the film, it need to be brighter in the dark area's, the sound quality was very muffled and hard to understand and some of shots were to long. The mise-en-scene in particular was perfect for the convention purposes as G.O.O.D wanted it to be a gritty action London film.

Our first recognized mistake as stated earlier was the lengths of the shots. which is unconventional for a film trailer as they try to squeeze as much as possible. Our teacher noticed that It seemed we were producing a movie more than a trailer and we should no get carried away. The conventional genre adaption was there in terms of costume and the story but the main focus was making every shot snappy and quick.

We looked again into real media products such as the expendables, transporter (Video above) and mission impossible. Here you see the shots are quick and sharp with a few long enough shots which inspired us with new ideas by examining new codes and conventions of the action film trailer. The transporter 3 trailer shows the audience what needs to be shown in order for the audience to want to watch the full length film it in the cinema, which was our aim from the start.

In the Final trailer all the missing components and issues, picked up from the audience were all taken into consideration and had been thought through carefully in order for our genre to be consistent throughout and keep focus on our codes and conventions of a real action trailer. The opacity and length of the trailer had been changed so it was clearer to watch and the shots were consistently changing every 3-6 seconds apart form the odd few build up shots. The narrative was a lot more clear for the audience to understand the concept of the trailer. The fact that the shots kept changing with different locations and mise-en-scene helped drive that professional consistency to a real action convention of a film trailer.
Our final Video had many locations and and the mise-en-scene i feel was perfect for each shot and was conventional to the genre. Unlike music videos where they have location of either 5 different places, a film trailer has to be in many different locations, if not it defeats the purpose of a conventional film trailer. Our film trailer looked really realistic and showed similarities to real media film trailers as shown below. There was a lot of fight scenes now, different effects in the film (Frank zip lining down the shard) and characters in the film performed really well to the characters we created.

In recognition i wanted my ancillary tasks to show that it was conventional of the genre and product. I used Adobe Photoshop to create a front cover for a magazine which is in existing media products. The layout of the magazine (shown below) has the standard levels of an existing magazine and therefore conventional to it genre. Due to its design and the genre style of the codes and conventions of a magazine, such as the color choice, consistent font and image choice it fits alongside these 'real media products' thoroughly.

Here are a few real media products that helped me with my initial idea (shown above)
Front Cover Of Empire Magazine as you can see i have adapted dome ideas from this real media product  into my magazine.
Another Real Media product which i incorporated into my magazine is the bottom section where it has the '32 page' i put bullets firing across and put images of the film between them.

Another Empire magazine; and the color's are similar to my magazine. Also the iron man logo is in the middle like my pelican hunter logo.

The G.O.O.D Review

Here are a couple of reviews about the Pelican Hunter Film Trailer, there are mostly positive reviews from different members of the audience after watching it at the 6th from evening...

G.O.O.D Poster & DVD Cover

The G.O.O.D Team decided to produce extra posters and added a DVD cover. Though there was no draft up, we all decided to sit together and put our ideas forward on Photoshop. The effect we went for was to keep everything together so nothing looked out of place, what i mean by this we wanted to make sure all the ancillary tasks had a link between them. We kept the the posters and DVD covers conventional to our genre and the style and the way we have produced the poster and DVD cover represents within itself.
We made sure the two main characters were always the main focus and we had to make sure they always presented themselves as a face off between them both. Here is The Pelican 'Petrov Kane'
Here is Frank Miller

Another Poster this time different. we wanted a really amazing image that someone would look at it and will jump out at them. The glass shatter effect was an amazing element to the convention representing war between the two characters.

Frank Miller Poster

The DVD cover was really just an add on. We felt it would be more professional to produce a DVD Cover though this is the rough version you can see what we tried to capture and still trying to link everything together.

G.O.O.D Magazine Ancillary Task

Drafts
I drew a couple of drafts to have an understanding to what i was going to produce for my magazine. It took took three stages to develop and i had to think about the conventions of the magazine and it had to link back to my film trailer. I thought about every step adding different elements that could to a conventional magazine cover and what the audience would expect to see in a action magazine.
This is the first stage of the development processes, as you can see i have a basic layout of an idea and i all i must do is expand my ideas

This is the seconded draft as you can see it has been developed alot more than the first. It has to be tweaked a bit more so it looks like a real magazine cover, such as the spine of the magazine and make sure im using the right image for the front cover, the font is right and the whole concept.

Here is the final Draft and what it should look like in the end. I have put a spine on the side so it gives that proffesinal look and feel and it will attract audiences by the concept of the film, as magazines have to be exciting in order for the public to buy it and read. The barb wire wrapped round the text and the main image gives the magazine a hard look witch is reception theory giving the audience what they need and should expect from a action film magazine.

                   Step 1
First i took the shoots that Charlie & I took and placed it in Photo shop of Frank 'David'. I used this image as it represented our film alot by the use of the pose, guns and stature of the image. It is conventional and this is what an audience would expect from a action movie, which ties in with the reception theory and mode of address.
Step 2
The next step i performed was adding barb wire for a background. I used this idea as it was conventional to the magazine and goes with the genre I'm basing it on which is the action category. The barb wire represents the strength of the magazine and adds a very conventional feel.
Step 3
I then added light exposure and Brightness and Contrasts on Davids back to give that Hollywood professional photography look. I then added Text and placed it behind David and automated the colour to red and added an outer glow which was yellow, i decided to keep that colour primary to the whole magazine so it all matched up and did not look untidy. I also Wrapped the barb wire around David to give it that 3D effect and that will attract the audience ans its something exciting and different.

Step 4
I Then added a sub heading titled 'The Ultimate Exclusive' and i kept that Yellow as it stood out and I'm keeping the colour code the consistent through out.

Then i went on the Internet and found an image of a bullet and the wind coming off it, i photoshoped it and put at the the bottom of my magazine. It was black at first but i decided to change the bullet red and the wind yellow to keep the colour coordination consistent. I then added text on the bullet and put Synergy, my magazine title. Then i started putting in behind the scene pictures of the film as i was showing an exclusive insight to the film, but after talking to my teacher i will change it to shots of the film.

Step 5
The next step was to create the Pelican Hunter Logo, and it had to be a font that would be consistent through out our film and throughout my other team mates magazines. I then had an idea to wrap the barb wire around the text which would give it that gritty action feel and still keep it 3D and conventional. I did not really like the position it was in so i changed it.

Step 6
Here is the changed version here you can see the barb wire has tightened up and looks more 3 dimensional, the position has also changed slightly.

Step 7
I added the rest of the pictures and did the bullet effect in reverse so it created a border for my pictures.

Step 8
I Then added the small details a magazine needs, even though i need to change a few things around here is a basic idea of what i have produced.

Step 9
I then tried different types of ways of presenting it but in the end i stuck with the original sub heading 'The worlds greatest movie magazine'

Step 10
Then i added the information about what was going to feature in the magazine. I kept the colour so it matched up. One thing i need to do is to tighten it up so it is all equal and use the guide lines to help me.
Step 11
The last Thing to do was to add a bar code, which is too large and i will reduce it down.

Here is the final Image/Magazine Cover. Though this is the final edit i added a margin/spine to make it look more professional and it refelcts a real magazine cover and is conventinal to magazines we see today. It is a also has a colour cordination so everything looks the same and not all over the place. I feel that the public would buy this type of magaizine as it has all the right features and conventions of a real magazine.

We Have A G.O.O.D Draft No.3

The Pelican Hunter is around the corner of virtually being finished, all that is left to do is tidy the editing up and the video, but I am proud to say, as well as my piers, that the video looks brilliant. G.O.O.D had they doubts about where there video was and if the concept and the shots they took were right for the film, however i had to give the go ahead and this is what was produced.
The things that need to be tided up are, the rewind when you see the text and we have not added the 15 certificate. Also when it blacks out i added a heart beat sound which needs to be placed in before David shots on the last shot. And the opacity needs to be raised.

The Film Effects Are Really G.O.O.D

The effects play a big part in G.O.O.D’s film, epically being an action film and the digital age moving forward it had to be used in the film. The reason for this is the audience now go to see films for the effects and the way it used. In all action films there will be uses of effects, and the programme for the effect is called Adobe after Effects, which the top film studios all use. Here are a few examples of effects that will be incorporated in G.O.O.D’s film.
This effect was created on Adobe Affter Effetcs and is just an example of moving bullet in which we used in our Film title at the end credits.
Here is the Example of the bullets in motion with the title.
Another Example of the Bullets.
Here is another effect done on Affter Effects which is used in the shot of Petrov on the phone talking to Frank, with the cigarette in his hands.

Here is another effect that has been edited in Affter effects, this has not been used in the film trailer yet but its the type of effect that is used in the film trailer, i.e. building exploding, windows burning.

Never Mess With G.O.O.D

Here is a Text Charlie edited on the trailer with the idea from Alex & Matt. It is a moving image text which would attract audience's because technology has moved forward so we did not want it to look armature. We changed this a couple of times as our teacher said it should be punchy and straight to the point so in the end G.O.O.D stayed with 'Never take from a man who has NOTHING to lose' which is in the final trailer.

That’s Some G.O.O.D Gun Shots

In this Shot Frank is assembling his Guns ready for battle against Petrov Kane and his Hench men. The shot had to be really quick but had to have impact, as it was the driving point for the start of the film to its climax. For the gun assembling there was 8 takes, but G.O.O.D had to scrap it as we wanted the ambience to be dark as it would better suit the films feel. So Alex shined a light on the weapons as Frank was assembling it and it worked much better. As well as that the standard shot of Frank looking over his gun worked really well as it gives a chance to show Frank status through the film and his anger to find Petrov Kane and kill him. The panning shot of the guns was Alex’s idea as it gave a chance to see the weapons in a professional way and most action films would show the hero going into battle and assembling their guns before hand, which is another convention and that includes reception theory that giving the audience what their use to in action movies, which is the use of guns, explosions etc.
G.O.O.D Shot
Here is a perfect example of the guns layed across the table and a panning shot from underneath.

I’m Going To Take You Down In G.O.O.D Pieces

This shot was filmed in Bilton Rd again and it was a 360 shot of Frank on the phone to Petrov Kane telling him he is going to take him down in pieces. During the editing a flare was added to the lens which gives the film more depth and makes it seem like a big production instead of A-Level students filming. The shots in the film ‘300’ were what G.O.O.D wanted to adapt in their own film and the saturation used in 300 is also what G.O.O.D went for. The way the shots have been used is shown throughout our trailer and that is generic to our film trailer in terms of genre and iconography.

Here is the shot

Here is the 300 trailer you will see simular feature's to our shot above ^ and the saturation aswell.

Thursday 1 March 2012

So far the everything has gone well, G.O.O.D have filmed alot and are coming to an end of production, but still have a couple of shots left to do. Here is a rough draft of what they have so far.....
Here is the Draft but it is not quite up to date, a few changes have been made since this. the voice overs need to be done, shots are missing and somev of the shots need to ber tightend.

'G.O.O.D Shard Shot Guys'

For the Shard shot of Frank zip lining down, G.O.O.D recorded the shard from different angles, and then used a green screen for David as he had to pretend he was coming down a building, G.O.O.D researched the film Mission Impossible 4 were Tom Cruise is zip lining down a very tall building located in Dubai. We thought this shot would work really well with the film as every action film would have a climax or a car exploding or bulidings falling down, and it shows that G.O.O.D have thought about the genre in depth, and why they decided to put this sort of shot and stunt, to put in the film. It was a thought through shot and G.O.O.D had to plan it out before they actually tried it. In the end G.O.O.D got the shots they needed, and edited them on Adobe After effects which Charlie edited and Alex created the sounds for it which will be shown in the film trailer. Though it still has some work on it here is a draft of what was created. To see a tutorial on how the edit was perfomed go to 8259TrinitySchoolCharlieMorgan.
Here is the stunt trial, it looks really effective and really is a brilliant shot and edited well. Only thing is G.O.O.D must tidy the shot up and add the SFX.

Here is the M.I.4 trailer, and at the end of the trailer you see him perform the zip line stunt, obviously as we are just A-level student we could not do it for real, However G.O.O.D have worked hard to have a good quality. This trailer is also conventinal and meets G.O.O.D'S genre bridge. So this was the best example choosen by the G.O.O.D memebers.
Here some Pictures that were taken and Photoshoped

Love Is G.O.O.D In The Air

This is one of the first shots that G.O.O.D members Alex & Charlie shot. The aim was to get the London shots done so they would not have to go there again. Here is the Shot that consists of the main character and his girlfriend Lucy who later on in the film gets shot by Petrov Kane the notorious, ruthless villain in our film trailer The shot was a standard shot of the two together, G.O.O.D did not want it to be too long so it was a small clip in the final edit when we cut it down.

G.O.O.D FIGHT SCENE EDITED

The fight scene took place in a truck stop area near Alex's area. The fight consists of our main actor and one of our fellow piers, we used him as he was tall as well as his ego, and G.o.o.d tried to get across the big bad guy in the movie which is typical in most action films such as, 'Kiss of the dragon', Wolverine and Wanted. Though we shoot a lot of shot we had to cut it down and put it in different sections of the film trailer. Here are the shots in different stages and edited.

G.O.O.D Run

Though this is just a short clip it was still a vital shot that needed to link in the film. It also was conventional to the film trailer as many action movies will have a shot of the main character running from something crashing, falling or a bad guy. Here is a small clip that has been edited by adding a silver filter which gives it that movie effect aswell as raising the opacity to make the shot lighter.

The G.O.O.D Fight

Alex found a place where he lived called Bilton Rd in which was a long road and was perfect to film a fight scene. G.O.O.D had to find the perfect ‘big henchman’ and in the end they choose Tayo Adeboye, a fellow media student. Charlie & Alex then had to call the police, to inform them that they were going to be using guns. Even though there was no one round the area G.O.O.D still had to call just for confirmation. G.O.O.D members Charlie & Alex then drove down to Bilton Rd with the Cast then filmed a series of shots. The basic idea was Frank was under attack by the big Hench men and they were firing back and forth, they then made their way to fight each other, which was Choreographed by Charlie & Alex, as it had to be realistic as possible. The area chosen was also though about as it had to be conventinal to the genre, and this includes reception theory where G.O.O.D are thinking about Mise-En-Scene and are giving the audience what they want and expect form an action movie.
Alex also added sounds to the clip which was done a music software called Fruity Loops or ‘FL Studios’ as Alex’s produces outside of school for UK artists. He automated the sound effects to make them sound as real as possible and changed the bass and texture of the sound. Throughout the whole movie trailer he had to add reverb and bass boost to give that movie feel to it as you see in other trailers such as, Expendables, Wrath of the Titans and Man On The Ledge. A later tutorial will be shown on how he produced the sounds.
If You listen to the way the voice has that echo to it, and the sounds of sirens and trains are used in the film have all been edited to bring the trailer to a climax as all trailers do, and this is what G.O.O.D will be showing in there film trailer.
Here is another example of different sounds, again the use of police sirens and guns. Though this shot of G.O.O.D's film is long they will obviously cut it short so the sound will be in contrast with the other sounds together, so that it would all work well.

Its a G.O.O.D News Report (Alex 'Arcade', Charlie Morgan & Matt Bell)

Here is the clip Alex & Charlie filmed for the news report. It was a standard shot, as Alex & Charlie did not have to do any panning or tracking as all news reports have steaded camera. Alex had to do research into News reports even though it was a 5 seconded clip in our film we had to research other news reports and how they layout there templates around them. Mise-en-scene was vital for the shot as the news reporter had to dress appropriately had to be formal and had to have the right script, which Charlie & Alex took care of. For the background moving Image Alex Filmed a boat when they were in London it was a moving image and this is conventional to other news reports as they would have a green screen image behind them then the editor would use an moving image behind them.

Here is the research Alex & Charlie looked into in order to produce there shot.

Lucy Died A G.O.O.D Death

Lucy's death was a difficult problem during the editing process as our piers and teachers could not see it clearly, and G.O.O.D had to change the Opacity eight times at most. It did cause problems as the aim was for the shot to be dark, but it was brightened here are is the shot in two different stages and the final stage. Another thing G.O.O.D did not add was David noting something wrong, because in the trailer you see Petrov killing Lucy and David entering right away, but Alex and Charlie feel that the audience would understand that it was after Petrov left he would have entered.

Looking Forward To It G.O.O.D

Here is a tracking and panning shot of Petrov played by our lead Editor Charlie Morgan. We had to re arrange our class room so it looked like a drug war lords house with the Russian and american effect with the Glass bottles around the cigarette in the hand, so we really thought of the mise-en-scene and the dress style. Charlie edited a the shot and Alex performed the shot. it was shot many times trying to find the best on to use, and in the trailer it builds the suspense  to the film which looked amazing in the final edit.

G.O.O.D Pelican STALK

Here is the Pelican Stalk shot in its final edit, the shot was taken by Alex and edited by Charlie another shot that had impact on the film and the shot was really thought of by the members of G.O.O.D its a typical shot you see in most drug war lord films, when the police are watching the bad guy on a camera 'stalking' and G.O.O.D could relate to this in the film trailer.

G.O.O.D Hospital

This shot was again filmed in London outside a hospital, and G.O.O.D tried to get across that Frank was leaving  the hospital when his friend was admitted after an encounter at Petrov's Mansion when his team performed a breach in the capture of Petrov. The shot was an Establish shot that panned from the sky to Frank walking down the stairs, the shot was amazing as it linked between the film and it showed Franks depression.

The G.O.O.D Progression

G.O.O.D is currently working on a news report scene that will be filmed on green screen. It will be short but still has to be taken seriously just like any other shot. A moving background will be put on the background to show that G.O.O.D has done research into News reports on T.V and through the internet. As many of the news reporters are female we decided to go with a girl. In the shot the news reporter will be explaining that Petrov Kane the villain in our film trailer has escaped from prison. The shot will be no less long than 10 seconds.

Ending Credits 'G.O.O.D Title'

G.O.O.D has edited ending credits with the actors name in after effects Which again was led by Charlie Morgan. This effect is in every film trailer we see in the cinema or at home on YouTube.  G.O.O.D kept it conventional by keeping the same typography and throughout and looked at many other action film fonts and this shows in the motion animation edited. It took G.O.O.D 3-4 hours to produce the title credit to their satisfaction. Here are the clips G.O.O.D produced and research they did into the font style they wanted.
Here is the Charlie Morgan Title

Here is the David Titile as you can see it is the same as the Charlie Morgan Title to keep it continuous through out.

Here is the "Coming Soon" Title, again just the same as the other two.

Now This one was ifferent to the others as it is this had bullets shooting the title and is our main title and it worked really well, it is also conventinal to our genre.

This is when the film will be realesed, G.O.O.D will change some things around as this is just a draft. Still G.O.O.D have kept their stlye consistant through out and have put alot of effort into creating them.

Here is an example of a conventional trailer that has the same feel as the G.O.O.D film and the title credits of the chracters names. Also they way the trailer is layed out with film companies name coming up first then a clip of film then the logo of the 'Expandables' trailer. At the end, the credits have the summer 2012 credits but the layout is different form G.O.O.D's so G.O.O.D will have to strip there end credit and move a few text around.

Here the titles are moving like the G.O.O.D titles, and G.O.O.D members Alex & Charlie feel its better that the title credit move reather than just show it self as a 2d image because it will give the audience the sense of exitment and it shows that G.O.O.D have looked and studied other credits and looked at that one particular genre which is the 'action' genre and they all have that 3D text. It is also consistant through out the trailer just like G.O.O.D's trailer credits. Also it goes with the films feel with the streaks at the back like car lights speeding of, and G.O.O.D has that same feel with the bullets shooting the title.
